How to Play Chord Symbols

This lesson assumes that you have already completed the Writing Music Lesson on Understanding Chord Symbols.

You will also need to understand Simple Rhythms and Eighth Notes.

Two Primary Methods

Chords in Right Hand. This method is used when the melody is in another instrument or voice.
Chords in Left Hand. This method is used when the melody is in the piano.

As you become better at playing chord symbols you can also combine the two methods or switch between them during a piece.

Chords in Right Hand

Place the triad in the right hand.
Place the bass of the chord in the left hand.
Most people will find the right hand method to be easier.

Chords in Left Hand

Play the melody in the right hand.
Place the triad in the left hand making sure the correct bass note is the lowest note.
This method is taught in many beginner books because it allows the pianist to play both melody and harmony.

Comping

Comping refers to the rhythmic pattern that a musician uses while playing the chords. Here are a few very simple common time patterns to get you started.

Whole Notes. A lot of slower songs begin very simple in the accompaniment. Don't overlook the value of simply playing the chord and letting it ring. Use this to allow the vocalist to shine or another instrument to cover the rhythm.

Quarter-Half-Quarter. This pattern adds a little motion while still remaining unobtrusive.

Quarters. This is probably the most common piano comping pattern in popular style music. It is simple and yet effective.

Eighths. Use this simple pattern to add more energy and fill up the sound.
